South Indian Dishes You Cannot Miss

If you thought Indian cuisine just comprised of rich vegetable curries, butter chicken, naan bread, and Tandoori, you have been missing out on a lot. These dishes are lovely and known to be the culinary offerings of North India. But, as we all know, India is a land of countless cultures. And, it is often reflected in the food as well.

The southern part of India also has to offer plenty to the cuisine. If you are interested in getting a better picture, go for an Indian restaurant menu that caters to the South Indian cuisine as well. The South Indian cuisine in whole in itself with a variety of dishes that is spiced, steamed, and coconut-flavored.

The cuisine is inspired by five of the primary Indian states, namely Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. All these states have their own variants when it comes to the common dishes. They also have regional specialties that you would love to explore. If you are interested in trying out this unique category of Indian cuisine, we are going to mention some of the South Indian dishes that you must try out.

Dosa

Dosa was definitely going to top the list, probably because of its popularity in India as well as worldwide. It is a unique traditional breakfast food that is made from lentil-and-rice batter. It is crispy thin and eaten along with coconut chutney and sambar.

If you want a spicier version of this dish, you can go for Masala Dosa. They are usually stuffed with mashed potato with onion and spices. Many variants of this dish are also available. You can find Rava Dosa, Plain Dosa, or the ones that have different fillings like mixed vegetable or cottage cheese.

You can experiment as much you want, but you can probably start with Masala Dosa. It is a dish that you need to have hot and fresh. You can look for them when you go for Indian takeaway Cambridge.

Idli

These are ivory-colored, fluffy, and soft rice cakes that are served for breakfast. You can also have it with chutneys and sambar. They are mild tasting and light, unlike Dosa. It is an ideal snack for those who want to give their stomachs a rest from all the spices.

Vada

The South Indian cuisine also has a doughnut-like dish that is a great breakfast dish. It is quite an exciting snack that is crispy, hot, and deep fried. It is made from a batter that contains peppercorns, black lentils, cumin, curry leaves, onion, and chili. The ingredients combine to create a fantastic crunchy fritter taste that you can have with coconut chutney.

Uttapam

Uttapam is a very unusual dish that looks good on the plate but tastes even better. It is made from a batter that contains lentils and fermented rice. Several toppings like coconut, carrot, chilies, onion, and chopped tomato can also be sprinkled on top. The result is absolutely mouth-watering.

Make sure you try out these dishes when you want to try out South Indian food for the first time. It will turn out to be your best culinary experience.
